Pipe tobacco must be kept in an airtight container, such as a canning jar or sealed tin, to keep from drying out. That works fine if you only smoke is one bowl a day, but if you enjoy your pipe more often, then you should consider owning more tobacco smoking pipes. Cigar and pipe smokers are at higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and lung diseases than those who do not smoke. Cigar and pipe smoking can lead to gum disease and tooth loss.

One large cigar can have as much tobacco (up to 20 grams) as a pack of cigarettes (1 gram of tobacco per cigarette)! Even though many cigar smokers do not inhale, the amount of nicotine is higher in a cigar (1-2 milligrams in a cigarette versus up to 400 milligrams in a single cigar). The addiction to cigars is just as strong as that to cigarettes. A smoker’s saliva holds the chemicals from the tobacco smoke, exposing the mouth, lips, tongue, and throat to these carcinogens. Many modern briar pipes are pre-treated by the manufacturer to resist burning.

Because cigars have more tobacco in them than cigarettes, and burn for much longer, they give off higher amounts of secondhand smoke, putting those around you at risk. There is a growing tendency towards “natural” tobaccos which derive their aromas from artful blending with selected spice tobaccos only and careful, often historically-based, curing processes. The majority of pipes sold today, whether handmade or machine-made, are fashioned from briar. Briar is a particularly well suited wood for pipe making for a number of reasons. The first and most important characteristic is its natural resistance to fire.

Tobacco pipe smoking can be a very relaxing experience for many. The process of packing and lighting the tobacco pipe, along with the act of drawing smoke through your tobacco pipe, can be both meditative and create a sense of calm. When you light a tobacco pipe and sit down to smoke it, you can forget your troubles and relax.

If it needs to be loosened, the reamer, or any similar long pin can be used. A traditional way of packing the pipe is to fill the bowl and then pack gently to about 1⁄3 full, fill again and pack slightly more firmly to about 2⁄3 full, and then pack more firmly still to the top. Many tobacco pipe smokers prefer to clean their glass with isopropyl alcohol, which is often paired with salt. This is a faster option than vinegar and baking soda, but it is slightly harsher, so you must handle this cleaning process carefully. I would ask that you only mail in restoration projects from now until I return, as I will be unable to check them in a timely manner.

For this reason, clay pipes in particular are often held by the stem. Meerschaum pipes are held in a square of chamois leather, with gloves, or else by the stem in order tobacco pipe to prevent uneven coloring of the material. Matches, or separately lit slivers of wood are often considered preferable to lighters because of lower burning temperature.
